Between 1928 and 1930, a Tokyo publisher released a twenty-four-volume sourcebook that tried to catalogue an entire new profession: commercial design. Japan Moderne pulls forty images from it and puts them in a box.

Japan Moderne: Design Gems from the 1920s and '30s is a boxed set of postcards drawn from twenty designs in that original sourcebook, presented as a keepsake collection rather than a library reprint.

What was The Complete Commercial Artist?

Between 1928 and 1930, the Tokyo publisher Ars released Gendai Shōgyō Bijutsu Zenshū, known in English as The Complete Commercial Artist, a twenty-four-volume compendium documenting the young field of commercial design: posters, window displays, lighted signs, anything meant to sell something in public. It was assembled by three groups of designers working in Tokyo and Osaka, and it functioned as both an archive and a working reference for anyone in the trade. Nothing like it had existed before.

Who designed the images in this set?

Sugiura Hisui, who spent decades as the principal designer for the Mitsukoshi department store and is generally credited as a founding figure of modern Japanese graphic design, was one of the editorial voices behind the original volumes. Japan Moderne also draws on work by Tada Hokuu, Hamada Masuji, Murayama Tomoyoshi, and Ishimoto Kikuji, among others. They were the first generation of designers in Japan to treat commercial art as a discipline with its own techniques, not a lesser cousin of fine art.

What's actually in the box?

Forty postcards drawn from twenty designs: advertisements for radios and fountain pens, a cat-shaped archway, geometric lettering built to be read from a moving train or a busy street, modernist illustrations of jazz players and women with bobbed hair. The images track a specific moment: Japan's cities absorbing jazz, cinema, and Western fashion at speed, and commercial designers building a visual language fast enough to keep up.

Why postcards, and why now?

Letterform Archive Books, which holds an original set of The Complete Commercial Artist in its collection, published this set in 2025 to put the images back into circulation outside a library reading room. A postcard is closer to how this work was originally meant to be encountered: small-format, made to be handled and passed around, not framed behind glass.
