Good gifts for architects and designers are things with real design substance that they will keep using: reference books in their field and well-made tools. Our picks are Handmade Utopia for architects, the Japan Moderne postcard set and OBEY: The Art of Shepard Fairey for graphic designers, Danish Textile Prints for textile and interior designers, Hilma af Klint: Paintings for the Future for anyone who works with color, and a Toyo Steel ST-350 for their tools.

Designers tend to be particular about objects, so everything here is either a book they would use as reference or something built to last.

1. Handmade Utopia, for architects

Handmade Utopia: Back-to-the-Land Architecture in Northern California book

Handmade Utopia, $65.

In the mid-1960s, young idealists left the Bay Area for the redwoods and built their own houses with no training and no permits, then kept them hidden for decades. Now in their seventies and eighties, the builders who stayed let Michael Schmelling photograph what they made, with David Jacob Kramer's oral histories alongside. The houses are presented as works in their own right, documented at the point where they may be lost.

It is 496 pages and 769 color photographs, a record of an architecture that exists almost nowhere else. $65.

2. Japan Moderne postcards, for graphic designers

Japan Moderne: Design Gems from the 1920s and 30s boxed postcard set, Letterform Archive

Japan Moderne boxed postcard set, $22.95.

Letterform Archive, the San Francisco museum and library of lettering and graphic design, made this boxed set of forty postcards. They reproduce twenty designs from The Complete Commercial Artist, the late-1920s sourcebook that documented Japan's first generation of commercial designers: ads for radios and fountain pens, geometric lettering, and modernist illustrations of jazz players.

Send them, frame them, or pin them over a desk as a working reference for Japanese Deco design. It is the best gift here under $25. $22.95.

3. OBEY: The Art of Shepard Fairey, for poster designers

OBEY: The Art of Shepard Fairey book, Skira

OBEY: The Art of Shepard Fairey, $50.

Shepard Fairey is the Los Angeles artist behind OBEY and the 2008 HOPE portrait of Barack Obama. This Skira monograph follows him from the André the Giant sticker campaign he started in 1989 through new work from 2021 to 2024, in 295 color images, and shows how a bold, minimal style shaped by punk and hip-hop carries his politics.

It is a full reference for anyone interested in poster design, street art or political graphics. $50.

4. Danish Textile Prints, for textile and interior designers

Danish Textile Prints: 100 Years of Craft and Design book, Strandberg Publishing

Danish Textile Prints, $50.

Kirsten Toftegaard drew on the collection of Designmuseum Danmark to show how printed fabric shaped Danish modernism, from hand-cut printing blocks in the 1920s to the digital methods used today, through printers such as Marie Gudme Leth, Helga Foght and Ruth Hull. It is a clothbound hardcover with 100 color images.

It works as a pattern reference for anyone in textiles, illustration or surface design. $50.

5. Hilma af Klint: Paintings for the Future, for anyone who works with color

Hilma af Klint: Paintings for the Future book, Guggenheim

Hilma af Klint: Paintings for the Future, $65.

The Swedish painter Hilma af Klint broke with figuration in 1906, before Kandinsky and the other painters usually credited with inventing abstraction. The Guggenheim published this catalogue for its 2018 survey, the first major exhibition of her work in the United States, with 220 color images and essays that set her against Swedish modernism, spiritualism and the science of her time.

Her geometry and color hold up as a reference for any kind of designer. $65.

6. Toyo Steel ST-350, for their tools

Toyo Steel ST-350 cantilever toolbox in lilac, open with supplies

Toyo Steel ST-350 in lilac, $175. Contents shown for size reference only, not included.

Toyo Steel has made its boxes in Osaka since 1969, each pressed from a single sheet of steel. The ST-350's two upper trays swing out on hinged arms, with 8 removable dividers, above a bottom compartment long enough for a 12-inch ruler, pens and markers. It is the toolbox that designers keep on the desk instead of in a closet.

We carry it in black, blue and lilac, at $175. For a smaller gift, the T-150 holds erasers, nibs and stamps for $35.
