The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York published this catalogue for its 2018 survey of Hilma af Klint, the first major exhibition of her work in the United States. Guggenheim curator Tracey Bashkoff edited it, with essays by Daniel Birnbaum, Briony Fer, Julia Voss, Helen Molesworth, and others.

Af Klint, a Swedish painter who lived from 1862 to 1944, broke with figuration in 1906, before Kandinsky and the other painters usually credited with inventing abstraction, and she asked that the more than 1,000 works she kept private stay unseen for 20 years after her death. The book is the place to start if you want to understand her. It sets her work against Swedish modernism, spiritualism, and the science of her time, and includes a roundtable on what she means to artists today.
