In the mid-1960s a wave of young idealists left the Bay Area for the redwoods and built their own houses with no training and no permits. They taught themselves to farm and produced an architecture that exists in almost no record, partly because they kept it hidden for decades out of fear of building inspectors and drug squads.

A fraction of them stayed. Now in their seventies and eighties, they let Michael Schmelling photograph what they built. David Jacob Kramer's oral histories run alongside the images with archival material throughout. The structures are presented as works in their own right, documented at the point where they may be lost.
