A slim cotton belt from KUON, constructed entirely from the boro fabric remnants left over from the brand’s signature jacket production. Founded in Tokyo in 2016 by designers Arata Fujiwara and Shinichiro Ishibashi, KUON works in the Japanese mending traditions of boro, sashiko, and sakiori, reframing them through a contemporary menswear lens.
The belt’s face is pieced from indigo-dyed cotton scraps and faded chambray remnants, hand-stitched together in an irregular sashiko pattern. No two belts share the same composition. KUON refers to this fabric as Upcycled Boro Type02, a second-generation process developed after the original Type01 program that collects leftover fabric from the production floor and rebuilds it into new cloth. The sashiko stitching on this line is applied by artisans affected by the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, a partnership that supports their financial independence and creative practice.
The hardware is a simple double D-ring buckle in brushed metal, chosen over traditional leather-and-buckle construction for adjustability across seasons and body changes. Four rivet caps reinforce the anchor end. The reverse is backed with a solid navy cotton webbing stamped with KUON’s labels and care details. Because the face is pieced from salvaged fabric, variation in color, texture, and patch layout is inherent to each piece. Fraying edges, irregular stitch lines, and minor fabric bleeds are part of the material’s identity, not flaws.
