Century Denim is Kapital’s signature fabric and one of the most technically unusual denims in production anywhere. This pair is the No.7-S “Sumi” colorway, a five-pocket Monkey Cisco cut in the 13.5oz rigid weight.
The base denim is dyed with sumi, a traditional Japanese ink made from the soot of burned pinewood, historically used for calligraphy. Woven into the ink-dyed ground are sashiko yarns that have been rope-dyed with natural indigo, running in a dense dotted pattern across the entire surface. The resulting cloth reads charcoal grey from a distance and reveals a textured indigo grid up close. The weaving process runs on a single loom at Kapital’s mill in Okayama and is a guarded company secret.
The fabric is built to evolve. With wear, the natural indigo in the sashiko threads fades and bleeds into the sumi-dyed ground, the charcoal base lightens in high-wear zones, and the two dye traditions work against each other to create contrast patinas no two pairs will share. Century Denim is engineered to last decades, a deliberate counterpoint to the disposable cycle of modern denim.
The Monkey Cisco silhouette is an update to Kapital’s original Cisco fit. Mid-to-high rise, fuller through the seat and thighs, with a slight taper below the knee that still clears a boot cleanly. Copper rivets, yellow contrast stitching, a leather Kapital patch at the back waistband, cinched back waist, button fly, and the signature “Blue Handed” selvedge detail on the internal tag.
Fit and Sizing
Century Denim runs small to Japanese sizing. Most Western retailers recommend sizing up one full size, or roughly 2 inches, from your standard US denim waist. The fabric is sanforized but comes raw and unwashed, so expect an additional 1 to 3 percent shrinkage on first wash, approximately 1 inch at the waist. Factor this into sizing: if the waist fits true off the hanger, it will likely feel snug after its first soak.

Care
Wash sparingly and only when necessary. Cold soak or hand wash inside out. Do not bleach. Do not tumble dry. Line dry in shade. Indigo crocking is expected and part of the fabric’s character.
