DelMonico Books published this volume with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, founded in 1961, for its Yoshitomo Nara retrospective. Mika Yoshitake edited it, with texts by LACMA director Michael Govan and by Nara himself.
It spans thirty-five years of Nara's work, from 1985 to 2020: paintings, drawings, sculpture, ceramic figures, and previously unexhibited idea sketches that trace how the artist known for solitary, sharp-eyed children grew more contemplative with age. It also reads his practice through music, with his liner notes on albums from his own collection of 1960s and 70s folk and rock, published in English for the first time. It works as an introduction for anyone new to Nara and as a full survey for longtime fans.
