MFA Publications is the publishing arm of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, founded in 1870 and home to one of the largest collections of Japanese art outside Japan. It published this volume for the museum's Takashi Murakami exhibition, edited with an introduction by curator Anne Nishimura Morse, and it closes with a conversation between Murakami and his mentor, the art historian Nobuo Tsuji.
Read it to understand how contemporary Japanese art grows out of its past. Murakami's paintings and sculpture are set against works by Kawanabe Kyōsai, Soga Shōhaku, Kanō Einō, Itō Jakuchū, and Hishikawa Moronobu, arranged by Tsuji's categories: Superflat, Animation, Kazari, Asobi, Religiosity, and Eccentricity. The argument running through it is that contemporary Japanese art continues its tradition rather than breaking from it.
