Murakami's pop-saturated work sits here alongside centuries of Japanese painting from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, arranged according to categories laid out by the art historian Nobuo Tsuji: Superflat, Animation, Kazari, Asobi, Religiosity, Eccentricity. Works by Kawanabe Kyōsai, Soga Shōhaku, Kanō Einō, Itō Jakuchū, and Hishikawa Moronobu are set against Murakami's own paintings and sculpture.
Tsuji is Murakami's mentor and counterweight, and the two are in conversation at the end of the book. The argument is that contemporary Japanese art is not a break from tradition but a continuation of it. Edited with an introduction by Anne Nishimura Morse.
