DelMonico Books has published books on art, photography, design, and culture since 2009, many of them with museums. It made this one with the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures and Studio Ghibli for the museum's opening exhibition in 2021, the first Miyazaki retrospective ever mounted in North America. Jessica Niebel wrote it, with a foreword by Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki and texts by Pete Docter and Daniel Kothenschulte.
It is a look at how Miyazaki's films are drawn, much of it from material that had never left Ghibli's archives. Three hundred color reproductions of concept sketches, character studies, storyboards, layouts, painted backgrounds, and production cels cover all eleven of his features up to that point, including My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, and Howl's Moving Castle. The book was a finalist for the Alfred H. Barr Jr. Award, and it belongs on the shelf of anyone who draws, animates, or grew up on these films.
