Antonio Vitali, who lived from 1909 to 2008, was a Swiss toy designer who opened his workshop in Zurich's old town in 1944, carving rounded wooden animals for his own children because he disliked the toys he could buy. The American company Creative Playthings began producing his designs in 1954. IC Design now makes licensed re-editions of his work in Italy and Germany, in collaboration with the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich and Resly Reis, Vitali's life companion.
The cat is a toy and a small sculpture at once. Vitali kept his animals abstract so children would fill in the rest, and the smooth, rounded wood is meant to be handled. On a shelf or desk it stands as a piece of Swiss design in its own right.
